When a tooth cannot be removed with a straightforward extraction, a surgical approach may be recommended. At The Treatment Centre, every case begins with time to listen, a thorough examination and a clear discussion of your options. Treatment is never arranged until you understand why it may be needed, the alternatives, likely recovery and costs.
We assess suitable wisdom teeth, retained roots, fractured or heavily broken-down teeth and teeth that cannot be predictably restored. X-rays or three-dimensional CBCT imaging may be recommended where clinically appropriate. If treatment in hospital or by a registered specialist would be safer, we will explain why and guide you towards the right service.
What happens at your consultation?
We review your dental and medical history, examine the tooth and assess any available imaging. You will have time to describe previous experiences, anxiety or practical concerns. We then explain whether monitoring, restoration, a straightforward extraction or a surgical extraction is appropriate, together with the material risks and expected recovery.
Most procedures are carried out with local anaesthetic. For suitable patients who feel particularly anxious, intravenous sedation may be considered after a separate assessment. Agreed pauses, a calm pace and step-by-step explanations are available for every patient.
What to expect after treatment
Some soreness, swelling, bruising or jaw stiffness can occur after a surgical extraction. The amount varies with the tooth and the complexity of treatment. You will receive written and verbal aftercare instructions, including who to contact if you are worried. Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of complications, so we will discuss this with you before treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Can you remove wisdom teeth at the practice?
We assess wisdom teeth and treat suitable cases. Their position, your health, symptoms and proximity to important structures determine the safest setting. Some cases are better managed in hospital or by a registered specialist.
Will I be awake?
Most surgical extractions are completed under local anaesthetic, so you remain awake but the area is numb. IV sedation may be available following a separate assessment; it is conscious sedation, not general anaesthesia.
How long will recovery take?
Recovery varies. Many people return to ordinary activities quickly, while more involved surgery may require additional time. Your clinician will give advice tailored to your procedure and work.
Can my own dentist refer me?
Yes. We welcome suitable professional referrals and provide a report after treatment. Self-referring patients can also begin with a consultation.
