Night Guards and Bite Splints

Grinding or clenching can contribute to worn, chipped or sensitive teeth, damaged restorations, jaw fatigue and morning headaches. A custom-made night guard or bite splint may help protect your teeth and restorations, but the right design depends on your symptoms, bite and dental health.

We begin with an examination rather than simply supplying an appliance. Similar symptoms can have several causes, and a splint is not the right answer for everyone. Your dentist will look for tooth wear, cracks, gum or dental disease and signs of jaw-muscle overload, then discuss the most suitable approach.

What is the difference?

“Night guard” is a broad term for an appliance worn over the teeth, commonly during sleep. A bite splint is designed more precisely to change how the teeth contact the appliance. Materials and designs vary. Your dentist will recommend a guard or splint based on whether the priority is protecting teeth, protecting new restorations or helping manage specific jaw symptoms.

A dental appliance should fit accurately and be reviewed. Poorly fitting over-the-counter products can rub the gums or affect the bite, and soft guards are not suitable for every pattern of clenching or grinding.

What to expect

1. We discuss your symptoms, sleep, stress, dental history and any recent treatment.
2. Your teeth, restorations, jaw movement and bite are examined.
3. Digital scans or impressions are taken if an appliance is appropriate.
4. At fitting, we check comfort and bite contacts and explain wear, cleaning and storage.
5. Reviews or adjustments are arranged where needed.

Frequently asked questions

Will a night guard stop me grinding?

Not necessarily. Its main role is often to protect the teeth and restorations. We will also discuss relevant contributing factors and self-care; persistent pain may require wider assessment.

Can a splint help jaw pain?

It may help some patients, but jaw pain has several possible causes and a splint is not always indicated. We first assess the problem and explain realistic aims.

How long does a guard last?

This varies with the material, the force of grinding and how it is cared for. Bring it to dental reviews so we can check its fit and condition.

How should I clean it?

We provide appliance-specific instructions. In general, rinse it after use, clean it as advised, allow it to dry and store it safely away from heat and pets.
